Nashoba Park Assisted Living Celebrates 5 Fantastic Years Serving Nashoba Valley Seniors

June 2011, Ayer - Nashoba Park in Ayer, home to 75 seniors, celebrated its 5-year anniversary June 23. The community opened in 2006 at the site of the former Ayer Community Hospital following a complete remodel of the hospital and a new addition featuring private apartments, beautiful community spaces and a striking interior outdoor courtyard.

The development of Nashoba Park was spearheaded by the Volunteers of America-Massachusetts (VOA), a faith based non-profit organization that is one of America’s largest developers of senior care and housing facilities. Thomas L. Bierbaum, Chief Executive Officer of VOA, said, “Our intention was to develop a high-quality and reasonably-priced assisted living community to serve seniors in the Nashoba Valley area. The community’s success over the last five years shows that the community’s combination of housing and supportive services is filling this vital need.”

Stephanie Burton, executive director of Nashoba Park couldn’t agree more. “The response we’ve received from Ayer and neighboring towns has been incredible. Local elder care professionals supported us 100% from the beginning - connecting us with providers, referring families to us, and working with our staff. Residents and their families have also been very supportive. Our community has developed its own culture that is fitting of the area - a spirit of friendliness, helpfulness and independence. Looking back, if I could do it all over again, I don’t think I would change a thing!”

At Nashoba Park’s anniversary celebration, Josephine Sharkus, the first person to move into Nashoba Park, was officially recognized along with several other residents. Mrs. Sharkus said, “As Nashoba Park’s first resident I saw them pouring the concrete and placing the bricks around the fountain in the courtyard. I am lucky to have my own apartment, a nice dining room with good meals, and the wonderful staff here. I recently was out for a while at a stay in a rehab and I realized just how much I have at Nashoba Park and that I really missed my home here.”

Nashoba Park’s day-to-day operations are managed by Senior Living Residences (SLR), a local Massachusetts company with 20 years experience in assisted living and Alzheimer’s care.
