Cambridge, MA—At a special Appreciation Dinner on April 22, the not-for-profit Cambridge Homes acknowledged its dedicated volunteer group, The Friends of The Cambridge Homes, for exceptional service to the residents of this retirement community. The recognition coincided with National Volunteers Week.

The evening highlighted the contributions of several well known Cambridge citizens who have freely given their time over the years to The Cambridge Homes in various capacities, including Frank Duehay, former mayor of Cambridge, Polly Malcolm,  Nancy Fryberger and Chair of The Friends Committee, Suzanne Hamner, to name just a few.

Frank Duehay, who has also served on the Cambridge Homes Board of Directors, said, “I was delighted to be a part of the event. The Cambridge Homes, which has served the community of Cambridge for more than 120 years, is a wonderful not-for-profit organization with a rich tradition of service to elderly residents of the Cambridge area, providing gracious retirement living for both those who can afford to pay privately and those who need some financial assistance. I am just one of the many Friends who have supported and worked with The Homes over its many years of existence.”

The Friends of The Cambridge Homes is particularly involved in the social aspect of residents' lives, hosting a variety of programs, such as play-reading, monthly teas, and wine and cheese socials which create opportunities for residents to stay connected to the larger Cambridge community and form lasting friendships. The Friends also act as medical escorts for residents, providing transportation to medical appointments and accompanying them during visits, if requested.

“Volunteerism is such an integral part of life here,” said Lisa Lambert, social program director for The Cambridge Homes. “The Friends work tirelessly to provide opportunities for our community, from sending birthday cards to providing transportation and scheduling social events. The Friends enrich the lives of every resident in such a tremendous way, and we are grateful for their continued dedication and involvement.”

National Volunteer Week presents an opportunity for individuals, families, and organizations to celebrate the everyday people who accomplish the extraordinary through volunteer service. The theme of this year’s NVW is “Celebrating People in Action.”

The Cambridge Homes features gracious Independent and Assisted Living, as well as Short-Term and Respite Stays. Located in a renovated historic building next to Mount Auburn Hospital, The Cambridge Homes is a good choice for individuals who wish to enjoy the many benefits of city living, but who also desire security, personalized services and companionship. The Cambridge Homes is managed by Senior Living Residences of Boston, a leader in innovative, service-enriched Independent Living, Assisted Living and Alzheimer’s Care in New England since 1990.
