Armbrook Village Offers Senior Bullying Workshop

Beth Cardillo and Julie Waniewski Give Presentation on Senior Bullying in West Springfield

Bullying at senior housing, nursing homes, and senior centers was the subject of a workshop Tuesday afternoon at the West Springfield Public Library, led by Armbrook Village Senior Living.

Executive Director Beth Cardillo told 22News how improper behavior often manifests itself in the dining room.

“Well I want to sit with my friends and no you can’t sit there and I don’t know who you are, you can’t sit at my table and you can’t sit at that table,” said Cardillo.

Cardillo explained that such inappropriate behavior by senior citizens is often the result of resentment over losing a certain independence in their lives.

This presentation comes as part of the senior living community’s newest public and professional education program, “Changing the Paradigm and Creating People-Friendly Communities”. The course directly addresses bullying among seniors in a variety of settings and provides participants a toolkit including educational posters, staff training, and programming ideas to prevent bullying.
